OBGYN Darryl Johnson, D.O., has accepted an offer to join Newton Clinic, where 15 doctors, one physician assistant and three nurse practitioners offer services in the areas of family medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine and podiatry.

Dr. Johnson has most recently practiced medicine in Minnesota, but spent more than two decades delivering babies and caring for patients in the Quad-Cities. He specializes in a wide range of OBGYN care, including incontinence/prolapse procedures, hysterectomies, C-sections and minimally invasive surgical procedures. He estimates that he has delivered more than 4,000 babies in his career.

He attended medical school in Chicago, where he also completed his internship and residency. Dr. Johnson will be one of five Newton Clinic doctors who deliver babies at Skiff Medical Center.

“Dr. Johnson brings with him an extensive wealth of experience,” said clinic administrator Mark Thayer.  “The past several years have seen us focusing on the high-quality OB care we offer to expectant mothers in Newton and Jasper County. In addition to his incredible clinical skills, Dr. Johnson also has remarkable interpersonal skills, making him the perfect fit for our community.”

Dr. Johnson is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians & Gynecologists, as well as a member of both the American Medical Association and American Osteopathic Association. In addition to his passion for providing care throughout pregnancy, Dr. Johnson also specializes in training and mentoring other caregivers, and was the 2013 recipient of the Trinity Hospital Physician Educator of the Year.

Dr. Johnson will begin seeing patients in February. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call Newton Clinic at (641) 792-2112.

Newton Clinic is offering a new promotion to local individuals who wish to prevent unintended pregnancy. One Saturday each month, Dr. Esgar Guarin will offer discounted vasectomies at a cost of $599. This is open for both private-pay and insured patients.

A vasectomy is a permanent procedure for those men who no longer wish to have children. It is the most effective birth control option available for men, and is significantly less invasive than the female equivalent of tubal ligation. The procedure is done under local anesthesia, with quick recovery.

"By offering Saturday morning vasectomies, we are making this accessible to men who work during the week, without them having to request time off," Dr. Guarin says. "It also leaves the rest of the weekend to take it easy after the procedure before returning to work on Monday."

This new offering was inspired by the positive response last fall when the clinic offered discounted vasectomies in honor of World Vasectomy Day. "The available slots filled up so quickly," said clinic administrator Mark Thayer, "that we realized this is a significant need in the community we needed to fulfill."

In addition to Dr. Guarin, vasectomies can be scheduled during weekdays with physicians Dr. Zack Alexander, Dr. Duane Jolivette and Dr. Min Pak.

Appointments are required for a discounted vasectomy with Dr. Guarin. To learn more or to schedule a procedure, contact Leanna Price at Newton Clinic at (641) 792-2112 or leeanna@newtonclinic.com. The clinic is located at 300 N. 4th Ave. E., Newton.
